Saint Angel Castle, at the end of Via della Conciliazione, just opposite Saint Peter’s Square, is an ancient Fortress built in the 2nd century after Christ as the Mausoleum, that is to say the funerary monument and tomb of the roman Emperor Hadrian, then transformed into a prison, fortress and residence of the Popes. Some of the Rooms of the Popes still boast beautiful paintings!
