The Church of Saint Peter in Chains
Close to the Colosseum, there is a Church which houses the chains with which, according to the legend, Saint Peter was imprisoned. Most importantly, its right hand side nave is embellished by the marble sculptural work which Michelangelo made for the monumental tomb of the Pope Julius II, “the Moses”.
The second Church of Saint Clemente is an interesting example of the multilayered structure of Rome: this beautiful medieval Basilica with its amazing mosaics was built on top of a 4th century Church (worth the visit for its Medieval fresco paintings) built on top of a 1st century roman religious site. You will admire and experience different architectural and artistic leyers of Rome’s ancient history, 15 metres deep, under the level of the modern day city !
