TOUR 4: Two gems around the Colosseum: SAINT PETER IN CHAINS and THE CHURCH OF SAINT CLEMENTE (Half Day Tour)

The Church of Saint Peter in Chains
Close to the Colosseum, there is a Church which houses the chains with which, according to the legend, Saint Peter was imprisoned. Most importantly, its right hand side nave is embellished by the marble sculptural work which Michelangelo made for the monumental tomb of the Pope Julius II, “the Moses”.

The second Church of Saint Clemente is an interesting example of the multilayered structure of Rome: this beautiful medieval Basilica with its amazing mosaics was built on top of a 4th century Church (worth the visit for its Medieval fresco paintings) built on top of a 1st century roman religious site. You will admire and experience different architectural and artistic leyers of Rome’s ancient history, 15 metres deep, under the level of the modern day city !
The route includes several galleries and ends with the amazing paintings by Michelangelo and the major italian painters like Perugino and Botticelli in the Sistine Chapel. The closeby amazing Basilica of Saint Peter, the biggest Christian Church in the world, is not only the very place where the most important apostle of Jesus was buried but also a place of Art, with lots of mosaics and the most beautiful sculpture by Michelangelo: “La Pietà”.
Except for the Pantheon, which is a majestic ancient pagan temple which has been standing in Rome downtown since 125 after Christ, the other roman highlights such as the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Navona Square unveil the story of Rome throughout the 15, 16 and 17 hundreds through the elegance of the architecture and the names of the historical characters who influenced and inspired such great projects! In the Baroque Rome the glory of the ancient Imperial Rome and that of the Popes are perfectly interwined.
The Ticket entrance to the Colosseum allows you to visit the whole area.

Please note, I won’t guide Rome Tours in August
